TERASi has successfully secured the tender with the European Space Agency (ESA) reinforcing its position as a trusted deeptech provider to pioneer the development of Compact Active Planar Antennas for W-band Satellite Communication. The initiative unlocks the potential of the emerging W-band spectrum, in combination with TERASi’s Aircore™ Technology, enabling creation of ultra-compact, high performance steerable antennas designed for high data-rate SATCOM.
Rising bandwidth demands across Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to Geostationary Orbit (GEO) missions are driving rapid interest in high-frequency bands like W-band (70-90 GHz which also includes E-band), especially for aeronautical, inter-satellite, and feeder link applications. However, higher frequencies bring significant complexity in antenna miniaturization and precision manufacturing, especially for phased arrays.
TERASi addresses this head-on using a tri-ridge antenna concept and Aircore™ technology, delivering superior integration, and SWaP efficiency. The project will adapt a proven tri-ridge horn structure (validated in Ku/Ka-band ESA ARTES projects) for the W-band. TERASi's Aircore™ technology will further enable full integration of RF electronics and waveguide features in a single monolithic structure, ensuring high precision, low SWaP, and AESA-ready compatibility.
“TERASi has been a trusted partner of ESA for some time, and this win further reinforces that relationship,” shared James Campion, CEO, TERASi. “The antennas developed through this project will not only be compatible with the W-Band but will also lay the groundwork for the much-anticipated E-Band satellite communications. This marks a significant step forward in satellite internet technology, offering improved performance and expanded coverage for the European market.”
The initiative addresses Europe’s need for scalable, sovereign technology platforms like TERASi’s; particularly relevant as commercial mega-constellations reshape global access.
Keeping up with its commitment to enabling technologies that can scale into future flight programs, ESA has selected IETR, a leading research institute, to support as a strategic supplier, contributing expertise in active antennas design and theoretical analysis.
